The Effects of Technology

Nowadays, technology is considered ubiquitous because people completely rely on it to facilitate their lives. It plays an important role in influencing  the society and individuals in both negative and positive ways. For this reason, there is a serious conflict among educators about whether technology is useful or harmful for our societies and especially for the new generation.

On one hand, proponents of technology suggest that using technology leads to ease and changes our lives for the better. For instance, it motivates people to find any information they need with little effort and in a short period of time, which leads to create an educated and efficient society. In addition, people can expand their relationship circle to include people from all over the world, which results in exchanging ideas and knowledge and learning about other cultures.

On the other hand, those opposing the excessive use of technology think that using  technology on a daily basis leads to having a generation that is addicted to it and relies too heavily on it. People may lose the skills of verbal communication since they are more interested in dealing with these technical devices to get information and answers for their questions  rather than contacting their friends, teachers or even parents.

As a result, it may interfere with the role of parents in the life of people, especially the new generation. Many  studies have shown that there is obvious connection between autism and spending a lot of time on the new technology. Scientists have proven that technology addiction impacts  the perception, memory, cognitive function and attention.

Using technology is increasing every day, and the conflict about its effects on individuals and society are limitless.  I think Technology needs to be used wisely in order to support people and make their life easier and not to use it as the only source of communication and knowledge.

 Traveling to Mexico

The best experience in my life was traveling to Mexico with my friends. During spring break of 2014, I went to Cancun where I spent the best 8 days in my life--it was a unique adventure for me. Before traveling, I was kind of worried about the food and if it was going to be safe or not, but when I arrived I found out that Cancun was full of tourists and everything was perfect. On the other hand, the worst thing was having fewer choices and high prices. For example, I went to a seafood restaurant and the owner said since we were four people we should order no less than $200 dollars worth of food. We had no choice because it was the only one in the "Hotel Zone" that was open at midnight.

Experiencing  different ways of delivering  products or services for tourists was so great because they did use every chance just to get the consumer's attention. One of the best ways was a helicopter flying in the hotel zone area and pulling a sign. There were some people that asked everyone to buy a full package for guide in town, cruising and taking pictures with animals. So this was an effective marketing tool and it got me so easily because I do love wild animals.

At the end, visiting a different place with a new culture, language and way of delivering to consumers was a great experience. What stole my attention most was the night life in Mexico and how it was so active till the morning.  You could find coffee shops, restaurants, bars and taco truck open at all times.

Learning a second language

Nowadays, the number of second language learners is increasing rapidly since the global economy requires knowing more than one language. Learning a second language helps in getting more promising jobs as well as getting to know people from different cultures and countries. For this reason, second language schools and programs are increasing and you can find them everywhere. These schools/ programs try hard to provide the academic knowledge and skills of the second language, which  takes long time to become proficient in.

From my personal experience, I think it is difficult to learn a second language effectively in a short time. It takes a long time and L2 schools need to be improved. The effective analysis of data helps these schools/ programs have a better understanding of their weaknesses and strengths. But they also need to observe the classroom instruction and provide accurate feedback for a teacher's  performance in order to improve instruction and to adjust the lesson plan. Additionally, I think that the whole society should be encouraged to support L2 learning and build a friendly learning environment.

Parents need to support the L2 learning even if they are not speaking the target language. Native students and other non-native students must realize the importance of setting up a friendly L2 learning environment. Instead of putting too much pressure on second language learners, they should try  to control the speed when they communicate with them.

In addition, designing curriculums that address students’ needs plays an important role in motivating students to learn the content of the course. Moreover, teachers can collect students’ writing samples and analyze the assessment data in order to track their progress, and have a clear idea of their learning difficulties and academic needs.

Meaning of L2:

is an abbreviation for second language, or a language that is not the mother tongue. Sometimes, it is used to refer to speakers who are speaking a second language. Often contrasted with l1.
